Campin’ Out

Let’s just go ahead and acknowledge the elephant in the room: Derek has red hair, and we all know how much I love red hair.  Ashley’s was even a little reddish too, which never makes me have a frowney face!  I can’t even tell you how many times I uttered the phrase “red hair is my favorite” during this session.  Annoying, no doubt!

Now that it’s out in the air, we can talk about their fantasmical engagement shoot.  Ashley was telling me that Derek is an avid outdoorsman, which I can totally relate to because my hubs Justin is as well.  You’re not gonna believe this (and I’m nearly embarrassed to admit it), but while you may imagine my office to be full of large, beautiful canvases with a pink leather office chair sitting behind a white ornate desk with a bedazzled calculator atop a zebra print rug on the floor…it’s really Justin’s old man cave.  That’s right.  I’ve got three deer heads right behind my own head, and a ram to my right.  There are two large-mouth bass trophies, three more whitetail European mounts, countless other antlers, a turkey feather display, fishing reels, hunting and fishing books, and about six rifles sitting all around me and my tan office chair.  In my defense, my office used to be in a beautiful room with colorful pillows and flowers and other frilly girly things, but the big awesome desk was sitting in here unused, and it just didn’t make sense anymore.  I feel like I’ve just given up my “girly-girl card.”  Back to Ashley, and how I can relate to her.  She also mentioned that they have a Jeep and a custom-made personalized fire pit.  My brain INSTANTLY went into campsite mode.  I had seen a session like this on a blog of another photographer I admire a while back, and it seemed like the perfect idea to draw inspiration from.  So that’s precisely what we did!  Ashley went on a gathering spree, and she and her mom set up this AMAZING little nook in a pecan orchard.  In that orchard, there also happened to be a precious cabin (the original Pecan Shed, for you locals) and a tree which recently “broke” (not sure how giant trees break, but I’m gonna go with it) into a perfect heart shape.  I really can’t think of a more perfect setting for an engagement session!

I could tell that Derek wasn’t uber enthused about this whole picture thing, but it didn’t take him long to warm up and go along with my crazy ideas.  I mean, what guy can be unhappy when he’s sitting on a quilt surrounded by all his gear?  Plus he had a pretty hot little lady very, very near him.  And Ashley’s pretty cute too.  I KID!!!!!  Of course I’m talking about her!  Anywhoosies, we had an awesome session, and their happiness just shines through those crystal blue eyes.  Can we talk about Ashley’s dimples for a minute??  Who wouldn’t want dimples like that?  Ultimate preciousness.

Just a few little details…

Said custom firepit:

If there’s a camping trip without s’mores involved, then we have real problems.

I assume Ashley is a better dinner cook than she is a marshmallow cook.  Here’s to hoping!

Like a good hubby-to-be should, Derek devours it with no audible complaints!

A little marshmallow catching contest:

One Year Down…

It’s always fun to watch the kids that I am so privileged to photograph grow, and Liam and Tanner are no exception.  Tanner’s my old veteran…I’ve been taking her pictures since she was the ripe ol’ age of 3.  Liam was one of the last newborns I photographed, and he is all of the sudden turning one!  We did a little hodge-podge session, complete with the usual fabulous outfits and great props.  When momma Heather and Gigi Bobbie put their pretty blonde heads together, they come up with pure greatness in the clothing and prop department!  I’ve even had Bobbie make some stuff for Jenzen (Gigi and Me Boutique on Facebook…shout-out!!).  Liam is such a little ladykiller.  He’s got this grin, and these adorable expressions…mix that up in a bowl with some baby rolls and curly blonde hair, and you’ve got a big batch of trouble.  Tanner was gorgeous and amazing as always.  This little girl can work it!!  I think I got my favorite picture of her I’ve ever taken of her this session…and that’s big, because I feel like I’ve gotten some really great ones over the past four years.  I had such a great time with this bunch, just like I always do.  We make an awesome team!!

Lots of “I can’t decide” on this post…

Ewwwwww, nasty sister kisses!!!!!!

Fun little section of this shoot…pouty clown!!

This next one is that favorite I was speaking of!!

I find it hilarious that she’s 7 and knows how to roll her shoulder forward like that.  Faboosh!

One year ago, this little guy was sleeping in the back of this dump truck for his picture with me!

Cake time.  I think it’s safe to say that Liam did not really love his cake…

Happy birthday, little man!

You are amazing and as always out did yourself. I totally agree that you took my fave all time picture of Tanner. I think she was a super model in a previous life..lol..I love that you captured Liam’s little expressions. I can’t believe he is turning one! I know you will be our life long photographer but most of all a family friend. Heather said that day we took these “Just think of the Day when your Taking Tanners Senior photos.” I got one better! Just think of the day you are shooting her wedding. I don’t think any of us will have a dry eye. Thank you again for capturing amazing moments of my grandbabies and for the shout out! You are truly the BEST!

A Walk To Remember

I keep thinking of this movie when I think of Mark and Becca’s wedding.  Not necessarily of the movie itself, but of all the backgrounds…the fake, painted backgrounds (watch the movie closer…you’ll notice)!  I don’t mean that in a bad way, like it sounds/reads.  What I mean is, every setting at the Christoval Winery looks like a painting or something from a movie…unreal in the most positive sense of the word.  Put two pretty people madly in love into those scenes, and you get magic.  I also think of how symbolic the name of the movie is: walking down the aisle and walking toward each other during first look are DEFINITELY walks to remember!!

May 5th was a perfect day.  It was sunny, but a little overcast.  It was warm, but not sweltering.  There wasn’t any wind, but a tiny little breeze here and there.  Literally perfect.  My friend (whom just happens to take AMAZING photographs) Karyn of In Bloom Photography in Sweetwater, Texas shot alongside me all day.  I think we knew from minute one that it was going to be a GREAT day!!  Becca was in great spirits and didn’t seem to nervous, and the same went for Mark.  However, right before first look, the nerves came.  I told them both to take it all in and remember it, and I hope that’s what they did.  It’s really easy to lose sight of the whole point of your wedding day if you’re nervous and are not reminded to focus on remembering the special moments.  The wedding was super sweet inside the stone chapel, and the reception was casual yet elegant on the patio of the vineyard.  This place is definitely on my VERY short list of favorite places I’ve ever photographed a wedding, or anything, for that matter!  Simply gorgeous.

My hubby Justin was the best man; he and Mark have been super close since boyhood.  They’ve been the ultimate hunting/fishing buddies, and have always kept in touch.  Mark lived with us for a few years during college as well, so I got to know him better than most do, and I can honestly say that he is the epitome of a stand-up guy.  He’s so intelligent, and definitely has his head on straight!  I’ve not known Becca long, but I know he’s found himself a real keeper!  Seriously, she’s fabulous.  And gorgeous.  And tall and blonde and skinny, and all of those other things I gushed about her in her bridal post!  I am so glad that she and I have been brought together by our guys, because I know she’s gonna be a good friend.  Thousands of well wishes go to the Edens’ from me.  I know they’ll be successful in marriage and in life together!

It was a true privilege to have photographed this wedding!

This next photo is a prime example of why I sometimes wish photos conveyed sound!  I’d love to know what she said…it looks adorable!

Sisters taking a peek at mom’s handy work!

You KNOW I love those earrings.

Beautiful bouquet with some of her grandmother’s brooches:

Meet Wedding Barbie…I mean, Becca.

This pic cracked me up, because apparently no matter how old (or young) you might be, you still have to make that weird face when tightening your tie.

Oooooooh, I love first look!!!

Photobombers.  The goof on the left is my hubby:)  He keeps it classy with a koozie on his red solo cup.

Karyn was so kind to bring her amazing settee back for the wedding!

Seksi!!

Karyn took the next one.  It came out of the camera very light and hazy like this, so I wanted to stay true to that when I was processing it.  I love the feel!

Karyn brought all kinds of goodies with her…including her fancy schmancy lights so we could do this portrait:

Glen looks so dapper!

Epic!

Tying the knot!!  The lover’s knot, that is.

I know this next picture is out of focus and blurry, but it just exudes joy, and I couldn’t leave it out!

Becca has some sweet grandmas:)

Get your Kleenex, people.  Becca sings like an angel.  She surprised Mark and her parents by singing “Mama’s Song”, and she even changed the last verse so she could sing a part of it to her dad.  Not many dry eyes on that patio!

This is what being near bursting with pride looks like!!

“E” for Edens!!

Devon, you did an awsome job!!!! theses are the best Pictures that I have ever seen…I love all of them…..

Off Into The Sunset

We all know that I love working with props.  It always brings something new to the table, and gives me a different way to pose people.  I love chairs, signs, things that are special to people to give their session a unique, dynamic, personal twist.  Unique?  Check.  Dynamic?  Absolutely.  Personal???  Most definitely!!  What did the Kurszewski family bring???  THEIR FOUR HORSES!!!  Okay, let me start by thanking this awesome family for having me take their pictures.  Secondly, I don’t know much about horses, but I know they’re big, expensive, and gorgeous.  It couldn’t have been easy to transport all of them to this dumbfoundingly gorgeous location that they chose.  All that said, I’m sure glad they decided to do everything they did for this session, because it was simply fantastic, if I do say so myself.  I could watch people ride horses all day long.  It’s amazing, the relationship between the horse and the person riding him/her.  It’s like the ultimate mutual respect!  I sort of secretly wish I knew how to ride a horse, even though I’m a little bit terrified.  As scared as I feel from it, it’s the most serene thing to watch.  Okay, snapping out of dreamland and back to reality…here are the pictures!

This first picture is taken in front of an actual natural spring!  It had one of those metal “historical site” signs in front of it.  Legit!!

Next one is my fave:

Not many things are cuter than two horses nuzzling…unless it’s two baby horses nuzzling.

Lance is a roper…we had to let him show off his skills!!

I REALLY really love this next one:

Beautiful Becca

Say hello to Mrs. Rebecca Edens!!!  This girl is the brand new wife to our old roomie/Justin’s great friend since boyhood, Mark, and my-oh-my, is he a lucky guy!  Becca is another one of those people that you feel lucky to know.  She’s got a charitable heart, she’s so generous, loving, well-spoken, intelligent, and can I just say PHOTOGENIC AS HECK??????  I am so happy I can finally show you these bridals.  Thanks to my good friend Karyn for lending me this amazing piece of furniture and for helping me shoot their wedding this past weekend (killer photos to come!).  I was blown away with Becca’s camera skills.  This chick is like nearly 6 feet tall.  I’ve been calling her wedding Barbie.  Major model skills here!!!  I’m so glad that Becca is my new friend, and I’m sure we’ll have lots of fun times together in our future.  I don’t think she’ll be wearing her wedding dress during those times, but they’ll be awesome, nonetheless!  Prepare your brain for gorgeousness.
